Garden Description:
The Victorian-designed garden sits on .42 acre in State Capitol Park and features about 650 roses in over 140 varieties of colors and fragrances. Walkways lead to a small courtyard with a fountain in the center and a heart-shaped seating wall surrounds an elegant square Peace Pavilion. Numerous benches scattered throughout the garden beckon visitors to sit and enjoy the breathtaking beauty of multi-colored roses amidst an historic ambiance. Additionally, forty-four winning Inspirational Messages of Peace by our youth have been engraved on individual plaques and placed throughout the garden to serve as points of inspiration.

Garden Description:
The Garden borders the Peace Plaza, in front of the Visitors’Center. It has 185 roses in a variety of colors and fragrances. The graves of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King can be seen directly across the street if you stand at the Peace Plaza, facing the rose garden.
Meaning of Design:
- The starburst design reminds us of the brilliance of Dr. King's life and the impact of his ideals on humankind.
- The pink roses in the center represent Mrs. Coretta Scott King's oneness with Dr. King and her continuation of his work.
- The band of red roses that weaves its way through the garden honors African-Americans and their contributions to the history of the United States and the world.
- The solid bands of white roses honor the special bond and similarity of peace movements between Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi.
- The various clusters of multi-colored roses symbolize the nations of the world and the universal appeal of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s message of peace through non-violence.

THE BASILICA OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI

that is open approximately from May through September.

Garden Description:
This garden is an interpretation of the life and ideals of St. Francis. The garden is designed with three rose crosses to symbolize the spiritual trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit or known as Sat, Tat, Om in Eastern religions. The first rose cross is filled with white roses to symbolize the purity of St. Francis’ thoughts, words and actions. The second cross is filled with yellow roses that represents the encouragement St. Francis gave to all to live a spiritual life. The third rose cross is filled with red roses to represent his love of all creation. In the centers of each rose cross purple roses which represent the stigmata of Christ which St. Francis joyfully accepted while giving love and service to all.
The Basilica is home to the Franciscans International (FI) which works on behalf of the poor for peace, justice and the care of creation at the United Nations in New York and Geneva.

Garden Description:
There are two rose gardens at this site. One is oval-shaped and contains over 160 multi-colored roses, with taller roses in the center to signify prayerful hands. It is close to the chapel that covers the now famous spot where a spontaneous water stream began after the appearance of Our Lady.
The other is on a tiered slope and greets visitors as one ascends the steps up the Tapeyac hill from the Basilica. There is a statue of the bishop and Juan Diego in the garden. The garden has approximately 115 roses in a variety of colors and fragrances.

Garden Description:
The garden is located in the beautiful Lake Shrine in the famous Courtyard of all Religions by the Windmill Chapel. As you peer across the Lake at the Gandhi Memorial, over 90 multi-colored roses seem to frame the memorial.
